A car that will not start is usually the battery, but not always. We load-test it before we sell you one.
Starting price for a common car, confirmed after the battery is load-tested.
Battery and starting, explained clearly.
Most cars that will not start on a cold morning have a battery at the end of its life. Most, not all, and what the car does when you turn the key narrows it quickly.
Nothing at all, or a rapid click, usually means not enough current is reaching the engine. A healthy crank that never fires is fuel or spark, and that is a diagnosis job rather than a battery.
We load-test the battery, check the charging voltage with the engine running, and measure the drain when the car is parked. A battery that keeps going flat is often a slow drain somewhere else, and replacing it just buys a few weeks.
- Battery tested under load before it is replaced
- Charging voltage checked with the engine running
- Parked drain measured if it keeps going flat
- Battery fitted
- Charging re-tested before you leave
- 12 months / 20,000 km warranty on parts and labour

Details
Anything without a published price is quoted in writing, parts and labour, itemised, before it's touched. Not sure what's wrong? The diagnostic is a fault-code scan and a road test.
You stay in the driver's seat.
Tell us what it does
Nothing at all, a click, or a crank that never fires. What the car does when you turn the key narrows it quickly.
Tested, not guessed
Battery under load, charging voltage with the engine running, and drain with the car asleep. You see the readings.
Replaced and re-tested
If the battery has failed, it is replaced. Parts and labour carry 12 months / 20,000 km, and charging is re-tested before you leave.
Can you come to me if the car will not start?
We are a workshop, not a roadside service. If the car will not start at all, a tow or a jump gets it here. Ring us first, we will tell you whether it is worth moving.
How long does a battery last?
Three to five years in Sydney conditions is typical. Heat kills batteries faster than cold. If yours is over four years old and struggling on a cold morning, it is near the end.
Why does my new battery keep going flat?
Usually a charging fault or a parasitic drain. Something is either not putting charge back or drawing it out while the car is parked. Both are measurable, and we measure them.
It cranks but will not fire. Is that the battery?
Usually not. A healthy crank means the battery has enough in it to turn the engine, so the fault is more likely fuel, spark or a sensor. Finding which one is the diagnostic, a fault-code scan and a road test, $49.
What are the signs of a battery or starting fault?
- Turn the key and nothing at all happens
- It clicks but will not turn over
- It turns over but will not fire
- It starts then stalls
- The battery or charging light is on
- It only starts after a jump, then goes flat again
- The headlights dim when the engine is idling
